How can I get pictures from a video?

Does any one know how to get still pictures from an 8mm video camera tape or a VHS tape?

  • Or can the 8mm or VHS be put into digital form, so the images can be uploaded to a computer? Ideally, I'd like to be able to get photos made from the taped images. One weekend my husband and I spent checking out the covered bridges of our [then] county (shortly after the movie The Bridges of Madison County came out) and along the way discovered several historic (circa 1800's to early 1900's) churches throughout the area. It was a great fall day in the North when the foliage was at it peak. However, we used an 8mm video camera to capture the images. We did transfer the tape to VHS, but neither one of us know how to get still photographs from either 8mm or VHS. Likewise, we don't think it is possible to upload the video since it is not in digital form. Anyone have any ideas? Any suggestions?

You need a TV Tuner card installed into your PC. Don't get the ATI brand!!!! Look here, almost anyone of these cards for sale can be used, and cost about $30.00..... http://search.ebay.com/search/search.dll?sofocus=bs&sbrftog=1&catref=C6&from=R10&satitle=PCI+tv+tuner&sacat=58058%26catref%3DC6&sargn=-1%26saslc%3D2&sadis=200&fpos=ZIP%2FPostal&ftrt=1&ftrv=1&saprclo=&saprchi=&fsop=1%26fsoo%3D1&coaction=compare&copagenum=1&coentrypage=search&fgtp= BestBuy, Circuit City, and even WalMart sells those cards too, but probably a few dollars more. Now, plug your Camcorder into the capture card and capture some video. From the video file, you can extract still frames with almost any Windows movie plaer. The card probably comes with software that has a button to capture exactly what you want. Now that you invested in a capture card, enjoy it. You can use your PC as a video recorder, or just watch TV. You can also use your camcorder as a WebCam. Then burn your videos onto DVD or VCD. Have Fun.

For around 30 bucks/tape, you can get an online company to transfer your footage to a DVD or miniDV tape. http://www.digitalpickle.com If you have any friends with digital camcorders (and experience with iMovie), it's really simple to hand them the miniDV tape and have them export the images for you.

Lisa, You can surely have the videos in DVD! Even still images you can get after the conversion, but forget about having them printed. The quality would be extremely poor, and the enchantment of the turning foliage would just vanish. Have your tapes converted into DVDs and the enjoyment would be complete. Good luck!

You can put the 8mm in digital form.
