Where to buy a VHS cleaner?

Does anyone know where I can buy a Hi8/8mm/mini DV VHS adaptor that you can play in a VHS?

  • you slot the tapes into a vhs tape! I know you can get them for the really old C tapes (which i already own) but i have never seen one for hi8/8mm or mini DV!

  • Answer:

you wont get one because they have never been made. the Vhs-c tapes were the same width as a normal vhs tape but the case was smaller, so you could get an adaptor for it. Hi8/8mm/mini DV are about the same width as a music cassette tape. you will either have to play them through a camera of the same format, or get a couple of players (not cheap) for the cost you may as well get them transfered professionally. can be put onto dvd if you want, or put onto mini-dv tape and even put onto a hrd drive so that you can edit the footage yourself. Good luck RR

There's a good reason for that. VHS-C is identical in format to VHS, it's just in a smaller cassette. So a mechanical adaptor is all that you need to play these in a VHS deck. Video8/Hi-8mm are an entirely different format. They are analog, sure, but the video is encoded somewhat differently, the audio even more differently, and the tape size and speeds are not the same. It's really not possible to read an 8mm tape on VHS gear with any sort of adaptor. DV is even more problematic... it's a different size tape, but the big issue is that DV is a digital format, which would only ever been seen as noise by an analog tape reader. In both cases, you really need a deck or camcorder to play the tapes back. If you have lots of these, DV camcorders are cheap these days (and kind of on the way out, at least for consumers), while Hi8 or Digital8 is nearly gone, but might be available used for little cash. If you have experience with digital video capture, editing, and DVD creation, you can do this on a PC, but if you're not experienced with this stuff and have many tapes to convert, you might consider buying a DVD recording deck (like a DVD player, only it records, too), which are well under $100 these days. Just hook the tape deck to the DVD recorder, adjust the recording quality based on the time of the particular tape (usually 1hr for DV or D8, two hours for 8mm, and more like 30 minutes for VHS-C), drop in a DVD-R on the DVD deck, press "play" and "record" at the same time on the respective units. Some DVD recorders even let you do rudimentary editing. If you have a relatively small number, you can get these converted to DVD by many "service bureau" companies, usually for about $8-$10 a tape. Just do a web search for "tape to DVD conversion".

They do not make a hi-8 adaptor to any kind of tape. You should get your hi8 tapes converted to DVD. You can do this with StashSpace.Com. It costs $7 tape for the transfer to a digital file. You can get a DVD made right away or use their online video editor to create a custom DVD. Works great for combining footage across tapes and creating themed DVDs. They burn the DVD for you for $15. Go to http://www.stashspace.com to learn more or get started. Good Luck!

As others have suggested, such a device could not possibly exist. The VHS-C format was simply a cut-down version of VHS. Hi8/8mm is a completely incompatible system... and miniDV is a completely digital recording system which is far removed from the old analogue systems. In short these three/four formats are technically incompatible! I'm a bit surprised to see anyone suggest that the college library would have such a thing!! They don't Exist! never have done... And anyone who knows anything about video recording should know this!

TFGtv.com

Go to your nearest college. Go into the bookstore and they might have them, but only if the colleges has a radio/TV department. If not there, you can get them online at Video camera retailers.

Tiger Lily

They don't make them. VHS is now officially obsolete. Get your tapes transferred to DVD.
