  Avid free DV is a great editor, and gives some quality features for freeware. However, here's a warning. It's based off of Avid's top editing program Media Composer. This is the most powerful editor in the world, and it's interface is geared to an industrial level since most movies we watch in the theaters were edited with it. What I'm basically saying is that it will take some time to learn before just jumping in and editing. Fortunately, if that doesn't cause you to go a different direction, Avid has free tutorial videos that you can get from their website right along with the program. What I personally think is very interesting, is that Avid has kept much of the workflow and key commands the same, so that if someone becomes good at using the program, they will already be familiar with the interface if an opportunity comes along to move up to Xpress DV or Media Composer itself.
