What kind of a video camera is the best?

  • My bf and I are going to buy a video camera but I dont know what kind is the best, Money isnt really an issue but i was wanting something smaller in size nothing huge but something with a good quality picture to it? We are thinking about going to visions as well?

    Smaller video cameras have small lenses and imaging chips. They do not handle low light well. Many low-end video cameras do not handle loud audio very well because they have no way to control the audio level being recorded. Digital still cameras were designed to take still pictures well - and they do a good job, but they can also capture video as a convenience feature so they don't do a very good job with it. "Best" depends on your requirements. Otherwise, look into the Sony HDR-CX700 series or higher or the Canon HF S series.

If I want to see what it looks like to fall from a 4 story building, I would probably get a cheap consumer camcorder using flash memory, press record and throw the camera off the building. The flash memory card would probably be the most likely to survive the fall (assuming it lands in something like an inflatable safe landing device). A hard disc drive camcorder would be a bad choice. If I need to record 5 hours of video straight - and there are no heavy vibrations and the camcorder is not at high altitude and I can't touch the camcorder to replace recording media, then I might choose a hard disc drive camcorder (assuming it is plugged into an AC power outlet). If I want best available video quality because of least amount of compression applied to the video digital video stream, and I need to archive the video for future use for least $/gig for long term storage and I want to use the same video formats that the professionals use, then I would go with miniDV tape.

Not really the "Best" just an example of why it is silly to use vague parameters like "Best, smaller, and good quality". Then there is my favorite "Money isn't an issue"...
