Can I get a job in video editing?

Can you really create moving camera shots in a video editing software, from a stationary shot?

  • I am an amatuer videographer trying to pick up some fundamentals regarding getting camera shots. I tend to shoot music videos a lot and was under the impression that the camera man's job is to shoot from a variety of angles, try to make the camera zoom in and out according to the song and try to be stylistic as you shoot. But now im being told that you can just record stationary shots from multiple angles and then use a video editing software to create the illusion that the camera man zoomed in or out on any given portion of the video to create shots that synced with the music and lyrics. Can anyone help me with some advice about what benefit you get from having an experienced cameraman or should I just be getting stationary shots from many angles and depending on the rest to come from the video editor?

My NLE, Pinnacle Studio 14 HD Ultimate can take photograph and pan and zoom on it, as well as video, using Keyframes, be very exact in doing so. One phrase the video folks use is 'Garbage In, Garbage Out, Remember that when shooting your video. If your computer meets these specifications, you can run this program, take note of what you need if working with HD footage. it is like comparing an electronic zoom versus an optical zoom. if you are willing to sacrifice resolution to get an "effect", then crabs, zooms, and fly-ins can be done in post-production. the cost is resolution will be very low in the effects section. you are correct, the best approach is to plan out needed shots ahead of time and get them at the gig. what often happens is the desirable shots are totally missed, so the editor has to substitute for the missing video. perhaps the people you are consulting are so bad that their normal "plan" is to fail at the gig and then fix in post-production. the job of the camera person is to be competent to get the shots that the director calls for. if you are allowed some creativity because the director has none, then an occassional well executed camera move is a very dramatic effect. not to be over done, and make sure there is sufficient straight video to cover the entire performance. Usually this means more than one performance is done, and each time you should have a specific assignment of which shots to get. personally, i don't like shaky shots, slanted shots, or in-out-in-out zoom shots done on purpose, but i am of an older generation so i say don't argue with the director.

While video editing software is a powerful tool, all you can use is what the lens captures and saves to the memory/film of the camera. If you start with a wide shot and have good resolution, you should be able to zoom in, but it may pixelate. You can't zoom out from a wide angle shot. You also can't move direction and create images in a video editor. Just like still images, you can only base the edited film off the original information. If you watch lots of film, especially music videos, you won't see a lot of the zoom feature. Mostly you'll see a variety of angles and super close ups and wide angles. However, there are lots of different types of music videos.
