How can you record sound externally?

• I make movies. And I recently got an external mic, only to find my camera doesn't take external mic's. Do you know of cheap ways to solve this? I can also mod my camera at a last resort, but preferably not, as i'm not really good at it. Also, its a Samsung SC-MX20 if that helps.

  You can use just about any audio recording device. Ideally would be a field recorder which is designed for multichannel recording, controlling gain, etc., etc. But even a digital voice recorder will work fine, like a Zoom H1 or Tascam DR-07. Used with a good quality microphone will make great audio recordings. If you have more to spend, consider the Zoom H4n or the TASCAM DR-100 which have two external mics inputs along with the on-board mics, and they have more features. If you don't have the $$-$$$ to spend, you can record audio using another camcorder. Set it near your subject (out of the main camera sight) and then edit the audio off the cam used for audio and mate it to the main video. Another way is to use a computer, either a desktop or a laptop. They both are capable of recording audio. Just use a good quality microphone and save to a .wav file. You'll need to use a clapper board (or clap your hands in front of the camera) to set a 'mark' point so you can match the audio up to the video in post.
