How do you compress a home video?

How do I compress an 11 GB video file to a 3 GB video file ? I want to make a DVD?

  • I just extracted a video from my video camera and it was about 55 mins long and its in AVI format what i dont get is how come it came out so big? the video file is so huge ! i cant put it on a 4.7 GB blank DVD does anyone know how to compress or make the video file smaller so i can burn it to my dvd? btw i have Nero 8 , windows movie maker , and i have free video converter but i dont know what to do?

    hmmm. that is about right. Standard definition video uses about 14 gig for 60 minutes... Anyway, I would use a DVD authoring tool (like WinDVD - though Nero may be able to handle it) to make that video VOB format. Regular DVD players deal with VOB files. A single layer DVD can store up to 120 minutes of VOB-compressed standard definition video.

As Little Dog said, 11 GByte for 55 min of DV is what you'd expect. DVDs use MPEG-2, so you'll need to convert the video - edit it first using WMM and then use DVD Flick (freeware) to convert the video and burn the DVD.
