  • What is the best camcorder I can get for under $200 or £120 It should record in a format that is compatible with standard video editing software (such as iMovie or premier) without the need of plugins or codecs. Thanks

    Kodak uses quicktime i think which is iMovie/premier compatible. All video uses codecs, it is just a matter whether your editor has included a free copy of the codec for the camera you are using.

For $200 anything you get will be very similar in quality to cell phone video. Seriously, I'd stick with a cell phone until you budget improves to at least the $350 mark where camcorders start to get their best resolution presently available of about 11 gigs/hour. $200 get you a flip with maybe 6gigs/hour. A good cell phone can get 4 gigs/hour. Data rate is one of the keys to quality, and you want as much data as you can get. As a comparison, a nice DSLR gets 20 gigs/hour, pro-sumer gets 24-34 gigs/hour, cine gets 45-100+ gigs per hour.
