Convert a cassette to a DVD?

How to convert Video cassette to Video CD or DVD format?

  • I have a older version of Sony Video camera that has no firewire IEEE1394 port that can be connected to a computer. It has only a AV out to view on a television. How can I convert my home films from a Hi8 cassette to a VCD/DVD or to the hard disk of my computer. Please tell me how and is there any hardware that I will haveto buy. Please help. Thanks in advance

here are quite a number of ways you can do it . You could use an analogue capture card in your PC and connect the yellow/red/white RCA connections from your camcorder to it and capture direct as mpeg. You could use an analogue to USB converter like this :- http://www.brickhousesecurity.com/ad02a.html and connect it to your PC via USB although I have to say I have never found one of those that works very well. You could use a digitiser - see here :- http://www.simplydv.co.uk/Reviews/av_digitisers.html and convert the output from the camcorder to digital and connect to your PC via firewire. Or if you have a digital camcorder as well quite a few of them (Check the spec) can be used as a digitiser by connecting the VHS to the camera AV input and the firewire output to your PC Which ever option you choose you will also need some sensible capture and editing software on your computer - I would suggest you go and have a look at :- http://www.ulead.com/runme.htm **

You have to convert the analogue tape to a digital format on your computer, and the best way for you to do that is to come out of your camera with an RCA cable and into a capture box connected via USB to your computer. The capture box is about $50 and an RCA cable either came with your camera or can be purchased at an electronics store for very cheap. If your computer has RCA outputs (yellow, red, and white jacks) then you need an RCA-RCAcable. If you have some sort of 3.5mm jack on your camcorder instead, you will have to use its included breakout AV cable or order one from Sony.
