12X optical zoom verses 20X optical zoom in camcorders?

Always go for the maximum OPTICAL zoom. Do not pay any attention to the digital zoom, it does not enhance the quality in any way.

Of course 20X is better than 12X, but to use higher zoom, try to use tripot to stablise the camcorder.

Well, 20x zooms you in further. But keep in mind that, the more you zoom the steadier you have to keep the camera or you'll see a nasty jiggle. Many cameras have image stabilizers that can help to eliminate this problem, so this might be something to look for as you get higher zoom numbers.

Both 12X and 20X optical are optimum . They are lenses. Difference is OPTICAL vsDIGITAL. Any digital zoom deforms image proportionally to X increment. 20 X optical vs 12X optical is 20 times bigger objects vs 12 times bigger...
