What are some HD Mini Dv Camcorders out there?

Can you use one mini dv tape on multiple camcorders?

  • I used to have a Sony DCR-HC52 mini dv camcorder that I recorded a few mini dv tapes onto, but I sold that camcorder a while back. I am going to get a Canon GL2 that I know takes mini dv tapes, and I was just wondering if it was possible/smart to put the old mini dv tapes I had in the Sony camcorder into the GL2. The quality of the camcorders are far different, and that's why I'm asking if its a good idea or not to put the old tapes into the GL2 and record better quality video on the old tape. Thanks

  • Answer:

Bad idea: -Recording over old tapes. -Recording new video, using the new camera, at the end of already-recorded tapes on the old camera. No problem: -Playing back old tapes. The only problem you might run into is if your old tapes were recorded in "LP" mode. The new camera might not play those back very well. -Recording new video onto tapes that were never used.

No.. Don't ever do that to your GL2. I done that before, it's no good at all. It will work, but what you need to know is that all tapes are made with chemical. If U put that old tape into GL2, all the old chemical will be end up inside the camera recording head. And U may have to take to the camera shop to clean it out. I tried to clean it out with the cleaning tape, but it can only clean so much. I end up paying $200 just for the cleaning services. I learned to use new tape every time or use the same tape that is being used by the same camera just for 2 times of use ONLY. Mini DV tapes are not that expensive, so it is safer to use a new tape. Believe me...I have a $3000 camera that I can't use any more due to this situation, until I bring it to shop to get repair. Then I end up buying another camera that works better, but and I will have to be careful this time. Let this to be my lessons only, not to you.. Good luck

the old tapes will work fine. but if it were me i would keep the old tapes for archive, and get new tapes for the GL2. but then i don't know what you had recorded.
