I need to put VHS tapes on my computer.

I need to transfer my VHS-C tapes to a computer to edit and put on DVD, but i no longer have the video camera?

  • All i have is the VHS-C and the VHS shell adapter, as in the VHS that you put the little VHS-C tapes into. They are all tapes i had since i was young and i would like to get them onto my Apple Mac and then edit in Imovies. Is there somewhere in the UK that i can send them to or do any shops like dixons do it?

  • Answer:

Doesnt the VHS shell adapter let you play them on a standard VCR? You'll need to buy a USB capture dongle (from Miglia, I think) which will let you connect a VCR directly to your Mac. http://www.miglia.com/tvmaxplus/ Good luck! Edit: Just found this, which is cheaper: http://www.tvstick.co.uk/products/productinfo.asp?catid=2&prodid=29 Edit to other answerers: Apple Mac. It's for an Apple Mac. Read people.

You can hook a VCR to your computer with an analog converter. Instructions ANALOG *If you have an analog (VHS) camcorder… or VHS-c... You need an analog converter, either internal card or external such as the dazzle. It's very easy to use and come with good software. You would hook your analog VHS camera or VCR to the analog converter, the dazzle and then hook the dazzle to your PC. The dazzle cost around 85.00 , but worth the money if you have a lot of VHS to tapes to convert. Anytime you convert analog to digital, you will lose quality, but loss of quality is better than losing all those old memories. The capture is done in real time, so an hour tape will take an hour to download. You will open your editing program and capture the video. Google video transfer in UK.

Thinking outside the box - you DON'T have a video player any more? I guess that means you DO HAVE a DVD recorder. VHS recorders can be bought for just a few pounds and all have phono/SCART output connections. All DVD recorders have phono/SCART input connections. Spend maybe £20 on a VHS player and £5 on the leads (Maximum) connect the output from the VHS to the input connections on the DVD, put the tape into the shell adaptor and record them direct to DVD. Once on DVD there's plenty of software to rip the files to your mac and, at that point you have a backup of the original without degrading further by the use of software!
