How can i open the .avi files at sony vegas?

I've tried everything and i still can't get avi files with video in sony vegas?

  • apparently these are the solutions for the avi problem in sony vegas- -uninstalling xvid codec [i don't have it, because i looked in my control panel/add and remove programs, and there was no xvid codec] -installing divX codec [i did that, and tried again, but still no video, just audio in sony vegas] -going into sony vegas' and then going to options/preferences, unmarking "ignore third party dv codec" or marking "use microsoft dv codecs" [did both of them, still no video] -downloading the MJPEG codec [did that, no change] i've also tried to go into windows movie maker to drag the avi file in there and saving it to wmv, but wmm ridiculously exits out whenever i do that. and i downloaded 101 avi to wmv converter, but when it says it goes to 100% of the convert, it automatically freezes my computer and it doesnt even save. & before anyone says i downloaded so many codecs that that's the problem, i don't. i uninstall the codec right away if it doesn't work. so what IS the solution?

    The first problem is we don't know what your avi files are - avi isn't a video format, it's a container file format. The video could be some flavour of MPEG-4 like DivX, it could be raw DV or any one of probably hundreds of other encoding methods. To find out what's in the avi files, download and run G-Spot. Chances are G-Spot will tell you where to download the correct codec, but if it doesn't, please post a new question.
