Are flip video cameras any good?

Are Flip video cameras okay for home videos?

  • I am going to Disney for New Years and I am leaving the day after Christmas, so my parents told me and my brothers that our Christmas gifts are limited since we're going on the trip. We go so much that I can't remember the last time we actuallu filmed one of our trips, since our video camera has been broken for years. I just got a Mac and I would love to record this vacation and make a short movie out of it. I know that Flip Video Cameras are pretty cheap, so I'm asking for one for Christmas. Are these cameras okay for everyday home videos or is it a waste of $80?

NO NO NO NO NO NO NO! Flip cameras suck! They look chinsy (and kinda are) also you can only edit the videos on the flip editing software (which sucks) but if you dont make professional skate videos, then theyre just fine.

Most FLIP personal video recorders are OK, if all you want to do is capture the memory as it happens, but they do have a few drawbacks. 720p video is their top resolution, while most newer models support 1080p. Zoom is very limited, and all digital...not very good. You are also limited to the amount of memory space available within the device. Once it's full, you need to download it to another source, and then erase the memory before you can start again. The Kodak PlaySport or Samsung W200 units offer the additional 1080p resolution and the ability to use a removable SDHC card, without having to download every time the memory gets full. Of course, they cost a little more, too; apx $150 US, to start. Word is you won't be seeing amy new FLIP camcorders in the future, as Cisco is getting out of that side of the business.
