Need to get mini DV tape to digital?

How to create DVD's from recordings made on Mini DV Palmcorder?

  • I have a palmcorder that records onto Mini DV tapes. I would like to burn these to DVD on my computer (or VCD). The only cables that came with the camera have RCA plugs on the end that you plug into the computer. The camera will burn up to 8 minutes of tape onto the SD card, which I can then plug into the computer, but I'm trying to transer a 55 minute tape. Do I need to get an IEEE 1394 digital interface 4 pin to 4 pin cable to do this digitally? Is there any free softward available to do this? My computer has plenty of hard drive space, plenty of RAM, a DVD and CD burner, and USB 2.0, Firewire, and RCA inputs, and is running Windows XP Media Edition. Many thanks in advance!

  • Answer:

Yes, you need a firewire cable to download your tape to your PC. Depending on your IEEE1394 connectors on you computer, you need a 4 to 4 cable or a 4 to 6. As a software, I recomend Pinnacle Studio, here's a link: http://www.pinnaclesys.com/PublicSite/us/Products/Consumer+Products/Home+Video/Studio+Family/

You will need a fire wire cable to connect camera to computer. If you don't have a port on your computer for the fire wire you will need a card also. Best Buy and Radio Shack have those items.I bought a dv editing program called Power Director here is a link to it http://www.cyberlink.com/ It is easy to use you can capture your video and edit it cut portions of video you don't want change the order of clips add music do voice overs or just keep as is. Once your done editing you can burn it to a DVD. I have burned several DVDs and it is EASY with this program. You can try it out free from the link I mentioned earlier the free trial does not allow burning a DVD but you can check out the ease of capturing and editing your video for free before deciding on buying it.

Set top DVD recorder, connect via S-Video or composite. Transfer to PC and burn on a DVD burner, via FireWire or USB or transfer card (capture card). Take tape to Wal Mart, wait 2 weeks and pay $19.95 plus tax.
