Hd camcorder vs non hd pro camcorder?
-
im in to making movies now, so my sony dcrdvd 308e is in a need of change. But because of the fact im an student im wondering if its better to buy an used video camera that's its used, but is more "pro" at the same prize as an new HD camera (canon hv40) so my question is CANON HV40 VS used "pro" camera non HD, which one is best to buy? (it will be used to a bit more serious movie making and documentary filming)

Answer:
most monitors and TV screens being manufactured now are going to be in the 16:9 widescreen aspect ratio. SD cameras may or may not have the 16:9 function, but really HD is the way to go. most new consumer HD cameras have better quality than professional cameras, though they may not last as long (decade wise) as a professional camera.

Happy new year! and glad to be of help to some extent. Honestly speaking, i do not think a used video camera is a good choice. I always assumed that the non pro camera will be better in terms of more "broadcastable quality" because the lens quality will be far better. But then again consumer level HD camcorder have that quality edge, but be wary that consumer level camcorders have lower quality specs :) I always say pro... Because of the word pro, regardless of era :P

the problem with broadcast quality SD used gear is they are not widescreen capable. almost everyone expects new work by independents to be widescreen (16:9). its a tough world and while it is tempting to get the great quality and super lenses of older broadcast gear that is going for peanuts, it won't be usable for making serious movies.

I personally wouldn't buy second hand as you could be buying rubbish, I would go for a JVC Everio.
