How do I transfer an old camcorder video to pc?

If I buy a MiniDv Camcorder, about how long does it take to transfer all of the video on the tape to a PC??

  • I wanted to buy a Camcorder but was trying to keep the cost down and buy a MiniDV. But I read searching for scenes on the tape take a long time and is frustrated. Also, how is video actually copied from a MiniDv Camcorder, via USB cable or SVideo? And if so is it like dubbing to the PC where you have to press Plan on your Camcorder and then press record on your PC's software??

  • Answer:

Transfer time doesnt change, what varies is the quailty. Most video editing programs require a 'real time' recording. Depending on your connection: USB, firewire, composite, etc. varies the level of playback compression. The average for uncompressed video is about 10megs for every minute of video, audio is about 1meg per single channel. If you dont worry alot about HD space, a higher sample rate is better. If you are trying to conserve space, use a lower rate to allow for more video. So, an hour tape in DV takes an hour to re-record for editing. Unless you use mark points and just use the clips you need. But one second of tape is one sec to record it to your computer. To record: Connect your cam to computer via USB or Firewire. Make sure the computer completes the connection. If not you may need to troubleshoot. Once connected, use your editing program to record video playback. Then the world is yours.

Get a hard disk recorder. No need to buy tapes. Honestly. But, in answer to your Q, if the tape is 1 hour, it will take one hour to transfer. To copy to PC, most make use of a Firewire connection, (or IEEE 1394). All the controls are on the PC. You press go in the software, and it takes care of the camera. The hard disc versions use USB, and just copy files. Much quicker.
