A question about lenses and adapters for Canon HV20/30?
-
I'm looking into getting a 35mm lens adapter thing for my Canon HV20 so I can get a closer depth of field and a more filmic look. Unfortunately I don't really know much about this stuff. So here are my questions. 1) Do the adapters do the depth of field stuff or do they just allow for you to add 35mm lenses onto (lenses that you would normally add to SLR cameras etc.) 2) Where can I get the adapters and/or lenses from? A lot of the DIY sellers seem to be sold out now. Thanks.

Answer:
they are just an adaptor. you will have to provide your own lenses. If you already have an SLR camera then those are the lenses you would use. be sure the adaptor is for that brand. the cheap/DIY adaptors have several problems you should first consider. first the resulting image will be up-side-down. This has to be corrected in post-production video editor. However it does make "framing" the shot in the field difficult and it pretty much limits you to tripod lock-down shots only. unless it has a vibrator, the ground glass focus plane will generate a fixed pattern on the video. this can be very distracting with HD. It is an effect much like looking through a window screen. there are two focus points. the camcorder has to focus on the ground glass, usually requiring a macro focus capability. then the SLR lens has to be aughhh manually focussed. not all SLR lenses have easy manual focus capability, and not all camcorders have a viewfinder with sufficient resolution to know when you have critical focus. This is a case where DOF can be a curse, making your main subjects often times out of focus when that is not intended. the best adaptors are the Letus brand. they support many SLR lens types, have the vibrator and a prism to keep the image erect. also expensive. available at up-scale camera shops, like B&H for instance.
