Whats the downside to DVD recordable Camcorders?

  • DVD recordable camcorders seem like such a great idea. I know they cost more than the MiniDV format. If I buy one, whats the thing I'll discover that will make me wish I didn't chose that format? Will it be reliability?, image quality?, DVDs will be finiky about what players will work with them? What?

  • Answer:

However, there are negative factors to. The most siginificant one is that video is encoded as MPEG-2 on a mini DVD camcorder, as opposed to DV format. This means that it needs specialist software to edit - you can't just use your regular video editing program (unless it specifically supports MPEG-2). And if a Mac user you're out of luck, as there are no MPEG-2 editing applications for the Mac. Also, mini DVD camcorders tend to cost more than similarly specified mini DV cameras. And the media is also more expensive. However, if you don't intend editing your movies and don't mind the extra cost, a mini dvd camcorder does offer extraordinary convenience. ++ The disadvantages of DVD camcorders are twofold: Video quality typically isn't as good as DV tape camcorders, and editing the DVD footage can be a real headache. As part of our testing in PC Labs, we import the video footage to four popular editing tools: Adobe Premiere Elements 1.0, Pinnacle Studio 9.4, Sonic MyDVD Studio Deluxe, and Ulead Video Studio 9. Sometimes the video can't be imported to any of the programs, and the rest of the time it's only compatible with one or two. That means you stand the chance of getting stuck with whatever options the proprietary software offers, which will frustrate advanced users. Our reviews will let you know which camcorders are compatible with which editing programs

nothing unless you erase the tape

The biggest negative factor for DVD camcorders is generally the consumers inability to understand how to correctly operate it. (see remarks from first guy doing PC Lab testing). The video quality is in excess of NTSC broadcast quality. MiniDV is an ancient technology, using magnetic tape vs. optical disc, but these maybe simpler for consumers to operate. Most operational issues are related to uploading the video to a PC. So, if you have an "aol.com" email address, don't buy one. If you have a "www." in your email address, don't buy one.
