How can I watch my 8mm Camcorder movies on my computer?
-
I would like to watch and store the movies I have recorded on my 8mm camcoder on my computer. Any ideas how to transfer them over? The only output is a circular hole with a yellow ring that says "audio/visual". Is there a "audio/visual" to USB conversion cable available?

Answer:
There used to be commercial places that do that.

I do that as i have attached a MuchTv Tuner Video Card (nearly $65.00) to my desk top. it has sockets where you fix the yellow video cable and the black audio cable goes to the line-in in your computer. Having done that start the MuchTV tuner, select "composite " in the selection box, "pal ", and "RGB 24" for colour., for sound just the "PC quality" will do. you can also record clips of your videos on this. And of course you can watch the movies from your 8mm camcorder continuously when the camcorder is in play mode. Though when you do this you have to switch on the play mode time and again as the camcorder goes to sleep mode time and again. Else if your camcorder has a s-video out and the computer (new computers have video cards ) has s-video in you should be able to watch your movie on computer. the cable (4 pin) costs about $15.00 in Tandy or JB hi-fie. I do not know of any audio/visual to USB conversion cable.(i do not have much authority in this field).

I don't know why chavanni thought you lived in the UK, there is nothing in your words that says that. That whole PAL thing is not for the U.S. (assuming you live here). We use NTSC standard here. Since all you have is an av output, what you have is analog 8 mm cassettes. One way to transfer those is, like chavanni said, to buy a tv tuner/capture card. But don't watch your videos on it, analog video does not look good on a computer. Convert it to digital, make a dvd, then watch on your tv set for best quality. One thing I noticed was I tried just inputting to the capture card and it had some distortions in places (common with analog tape)_After I ran it thru my TBC, the distortion was eliminated. Of course a datavideo TBC will run you $300. Most capture cards come with the software to capture your video. Then a cheap program like Nero 6 will let you edit and write your dvd. Your gonna have to purchase a converter for about $20 bucks or more.

If you have a vcr/dvd recorder combo hooked up to your tv you can record the 8mm onto a dvd then put the dvd into your computer. Just hook up the yellow and white audio/video end of the cable to your dvd recorder and the other end to your the hole with a yellow ring then press record on the dvd recorder and play on the 8mm. Here is a dvd recorder at Best Buy for $266 http://www.bestbuy.ca/catalog/proddetail.asp?sku_id=0926INGFS10085622
