How do I convert AVI video clips to functional dvd's?

Need program to burn huge video files onto viewable DVD with menus?

  • Hey everyone, I am new to video editing. My company runs biotechnology workshops that run 5 days long and we record each day and I have somehow been assigned to creating the DVDs for each participant. So I have about 10-15 clips total that totals to about 30-40 hours in HD format, I use a canon that produces .mts files. The files are huge, they range from 1GB-3GB each! 1. Is there a program that optimizes/compacts the final product of a dvd? 2. Would changing to DVD-DL's help? 3. Should I convert to something else first? My biggest concern is that most of this is literally filming someone giving a powerpoint presentation, so I need the words on that to be visible. 4. If I were to convert to avi, would it ust be better in terms of quality to just not record in HD format anymore? 5. Is what I am asking to do impossible? lol I deeply appreciate any help you guys can provide for me. Here is a list of the programs I've downloaded and tried: - Cyberlink Powerlink - end filesize too large with no way to resize. - DVDit Pro HD - Wont resize final output and wont accept .mts format - Aimersoft DVD Creator - see above - RealZeal DVD creator - Menu not easy to make and program kept freezing on me - DVD Filck - DVD Fab I do apologize if I ranted, I just want to provide all the information that I have. :)

Standard DVD players read the .Vob format, the files you have now are in AVI format.. I would recommend you download ConvertXtoDVD. Ive been using it, it works just great. It will automatically convert to DVD format, readable by all standard dvd players, it will then burn automatically to DVD... it is easy to use, fast and it works perfect for me.. give it a try, you'll love it 1. Download ConvertXtoDVD here: http://convertxtodvd.burner-software.com It can convert any video file.. like wmv, mkv, mp4, avi to dvd 2. Add or drag-n-drop as many video files as the DVD can handle 3. Insert blank DVD 4. Click "Convert" 5. Enjoy watching those video files on your home DVD player! =)

If you need it in HD then you are never going to do it with DVD. if you want HD video then you are going to need Blue Ray. or you have to down grade the video to Std definition. then you can get the video onto dvd's, with a maximum of around 120 minutes per dvd. the initial size of the files is almost unimportant, its the length (time) as you say you have 30-40 hours of it. If the company is paying for the software, or you have some money spare, I would use Adobe Encore. takes a little to get used to but its a very powerful dvd authoring tool. you can get a free 30 day trial. most of the process is drag and drop and integrates with most of the other adobe products. again its not cheap. another option is to get it don professionally, again depending on what you want it could be the cheapest route. if you start to convert video you are going to degrade the quality at an alarming rate, especially if you have text you want to be able to read on screen. all video on a put onto a dvd has to comply with certain configurations. one being that the video is basically a MPEG with the extension VOB. Your video format is highly compressed, to get the amount of information into a relatively small file, 90 minutes of uncompressed video is around 130gbs 90 mins of dvd is around 4.5gb. so your videos are in fact very small. I think you have also compressed the video even more trying to get as much information on the media as possible. compression means loss of quality so as you decompress the video the quality again reduces. I think yo have the start of a real nightmare on your hands, if you need to edit this video you are going to need some powerful computer. Its not the format that is causing all the problems its the amount you have. What are you going to do with the video? email me and let me know any more information I have a few Ideas RR

WELL

I feel your pain. You should find a converter that can turn those stupid mts files into something that your dvd authoring software of choice can digest. There's quite a few video file conversion programs out there. Maybe Canon even has some kind of free software on their website to support the cameras. Also, in order to avoid premature insanity, first thing you should do is make a very, very small mts video file to use as a test. Do not test every 2 bit program you find using a 2 hour, 80GB file. Here's a link to an article about an MTS video file converter that I think looks really good. Well anyway the article's author has what she claims is her picture on there anyway, and I don't mind telling you she is HOT! So yeah this must be a good converter. I have good instincts about this sort of thing. http://ezinearticles.com/?Convert-MTS-Video&id=2243410 and yeah. Unless you want to produce Bu Ray disks there's probably not much point shooting these things in HD I think. But the files you already have are HD, and maybe you'll want to do HD disks later on. Or if you really need to read those tiny letters, maybe you should look into blu ray disk authoring now. But you have to have a Blu Ray burner, Blu Ray disks, Blu Ray authoring software, and anyone who wants to view the disks would have to have a blu ray player to see them with. That stuff aint cheap either.

I think you may be taking the wrong approach - you may get better results, with less work, by converting the ppt files directly. I agree with the previous suggestion of working with small files, but I'd start by putting an mts file into your video editor, rendering just the audio and then using that in your ppt to DVD app. Please note that I've never done this, but there are apps out there that do this. <edit> I've just realised the main problem with my approach - you need to get the timing right. It may still give the best results, but it's not going to be easy!
