What is the best video camera for me?

What is the best way to get my videos on a DVD (Video recorded from AVCHD camera)?

  • Sorry that this is kind of long...Just trying to give info & detail so I can get the best answer possible. Hey! We got this Camera: Sony HDR-PJ10 and it captures in AVCHD format. I'm not familiar with this at all. It's our first HD/Digital camera (other than like,a miniDV camera that we had,and would transfer to VHS tapes.) We do have a few point and shoot still cameras and a couple of Flip Cams, but nothing like this. So, I am wondering what the best way to get this to DVD (that can play on regular dvd players and computers) would be. We do have this Sony VRD MC5 - DV Direct. I tried the Video -> DVD but it says that there isn't any valid or compatible video or something like that...but when I choose the AVCHD Dubbing, it does work. It created a few discs and then I put one into my macbook pro but it didn't play so I tried it on my dad's laptop (his can play BluRay) and it did play. Now, I also did import some of the video onto iMovie, and while I got some to iDVD, I kept importing some more video while I waited, then iDVD stopped and said that I there wasn't enough space for something...basically, it says it can't make the DVD because my computer is full. I have deleted a bunch of things after saving them to my external HD, and this was before importing video from the camera. There isn't some way of just directly saving all the video from the camera onto a dvd that can play on any dvd player is there? or maybe directly from iMovie? I don't know, will I have to delete some of the video I imported and then make a dvd, delete the dvd project and video that I have already copied, then upload and make another dvd of some more of the video footage? Because there is a lot of footage on the camera,at least 16gb worth of hd video. It says that my startup disk is almost full btw, so yeah, and I had about 30 GB free space before importing anything. Also, am I able to edit video from those AVCHD disks (that were made on the the Sony VRD MC5 DVDirect) somehow, because some of the video is from a sweet 16 we went to and I'd like to put that footage on a separate dvd and edit it on imovie...well, I had already started to, but I'm running out of space. I can work on both Mac and Windows by the way, so whatever is easier or if there's something I could use for this on one computer or the other, I've got that option. And while we're at it, any suggestions on what Memory Cards would be good for this camera? Thanks for the help and sorry once again for this^ long question/description.

  • Answer:

The best thing you could do, I am not sure it is possible on a MAC, is get a NLE that has the ability to make a DVD right from your footage timeline. The NLE i have on my PC can do that with about 3 mouse clicks, after I am done editing my footage, Barring that, the next possible way, and again I no idea if this exists for MAC, is get a program that can write a DVD, you would simply drag and drop you footage to the program and it wood do the rest, One thing I do know, the video you shoot with your HD camcorder, when finally written to DVD, will be of poorer video quality than any DVD made with the MiniDV tape camcorder you had, The external hard drive and the ones you can put in your case, in my area of the country are pretty cheap these days, I would suspect they would be similarly priced in your area of the continent. SD cards are not known to be too reliable for video storage. Not reliable enough to store important video on. I have seen many questions on here asking about how come their computer cannot read the SD card they just took out of their computer, I do video editing, my storage here is 8 TB in computer, 2 TB external drives and 30 GB LAN drive. can you make a direct (or at least simple) copy of AVCHD video onto DVD that will play out in regular players. the answer to that is no. regular DVD movie players are not HD, period. AVCHD does playback on Blu-ray as you have found out. But for DVD use it has to be dummied-down to standard definition first. as to the memory management issues, most editors can't work in AVCHD as a native format so they usually convert to a format that has HD resolution but that uses more memory space. essentially they need to create a second complete copy of the original video for work purposes. HD editing, especially AVCHD editing requires a tremendous amount of computer assets.

As long as your Mac has a DVD burner, you can use it to burn DVD. If you need details, this step by step guide will help you a lot. http://www.video-converter-mac.org/dvd-creator-mac/ Hope it helps. Contact me if you have any other question about Mac.
