  • Answer:

Old video, (VHS, High 8, 8mm, etc.) are analog signals. They need to be converted into a digital signal that the computer can read. There are several ways to do that. AN analog capture card, or television card will do that for you. (Although, in the case of a television card, it might not allow you to export it again if you want to go back to tape with your edited video.) The television capture card has some problems in that it can lag and might have some "dropped frame" issues. (Dropped frame refering to the computer losing a frame of video for memory reasons. There is another type of drop frame in video, so don't get confused! :)) In this type of situation the computer has to do the translation. The faster the computer, the less problems you will have. Alternatively you can get an external device from dazzle or ADS and a few other companies that will convert the video to digital then allow you to import the video through USB or Firewire. USB tends to be less expensive than Firewire, but I have seen more issues with USB devices reported, than with Firewire. Hope that helps, Tony

You would have to add a video capture card to your computer. You would then use the RCA Video and Audio cables (and sometimes S Video) to connect your camcorder or vcr to the computer tower. Here is a Pinnacle Card that I have had success with. http://www.shopping.com/xPF-Pinnacle_PCTV_110i

Get a video Capture, TV Tuner card. They are very cheap and they come with Old Analog AV Input. Jack in your camera and use Windows Movie Maker or any other movie caputure software like Intervideo DVR. You can Also record your favorite TV programs using the same hardware and then burn them on VCDs or DVDs.

Your video card should have an RCA input jack on it as well as your sound card also has. you use the RCA video out put and audio out put jacks from your VCR via a normal patch cable. The cable is color coaded yellow for video, white for left ch. audio and red for right ch.
