How could you use a pro camcorder as a webcam?

• Hi I have a pro Sony camcorder and am running Windows 7 64bit on my PC. I am thinking of using my camera as a PC webcam. Is it possible to do so? Ways I am thinking of doing it: 1. Use a DVI-HDMI cable (which I have) and plug the camera straight into the PC (Is this possible? Does the computer recognise DVI as a webcam port?) 2. Use a USB-RGB interface (which I have) and connect it to the camera's non-HD video output. Is there another way? Are either of the above possible? Thanks

  We don't know which video inputs your computer has. Generally, they have only outputs - unless you added a video-in card like those from Black Magic. I'll assume the DVI port on your computer is stock - so that will be video-out, only... not video-in. Since you did not tell us which "pro camcorder" you are using, I can only use my definition... generally, in the Sony HVR series, Canon XH and EX series, Panasonic AG-HVX series and JVC GY-HM series, they all have a DV port - also referred to as IEEE1394, firewire and "i.Link". Firewire can stream the high definition video... and this would be the "correct" way. Keep in mind that camcorders were not designed to be web-cams, so when they are running on battery and doing nothing (they think not recording is doing nothing), they will power down to conserve battery power. *Most* will not power down if plugged into the main power and not running on batteries. *Some* may have an option in a menu to turn the power-down option off... or at least adjust the time-out period. And without knowing which computer you are using, we have no way to know if it has a built-in firewire (1394) port, whether you need to add one - or if there are any expansion slots to add one... and, no, USB-to-firewire cable/converter/adapter things do not work - so don't waste your money trying.
