How can I transfer my 8MM video tapes to my computer?

Can I transfer my 8mm camcorder video to my computer ? what do I need to do that?

  • I have 8mm video, not digital and desktop computer in order to transfer the video onto a cd or dvd I want to transfer the video onto the hard disc of the computer first. Is that possible and what device or software I require,Thanks

  • Answer:

yes you can transfer your 8mm tapes onto the computer hard disk. there are two basic ways for that: 1- directly via your camcorder (if ur camcorder comes with a usb jack) 2- using a media conversion device like those from pinnacle systems. if your camcorder supports usb streaming then just plug the usb cord in the pc and transfer the videos using the supplied CD if your camcorder does not support usb streaming then get one of the pinnacle systems devices and transfer using them no other way that i know of!

you cna buy video cards that connect your PC to the camera.. I thiink they are made ny Pinnacle, amongst others if its not dodgy contnet, or requiring a lot of editing it may be better to get it done elsewhere i think if you need to edit the films it can take a lot of computer power. I know converting LP's to CD/MP3 took a long time..

OK first you could get one of those tv to computer things with recording ability meaning whatever on tv goes to the pc and you can record it and it's saved. Ok buy one of those, I recommend an external usb wintv and then you can connect your camera to the video and get a vide cable and plug it into the back of the video and the other side into the ariel hole on the wintv device. Then scan for it on the pc and then record, I have done it loads of times. :)

You need to take the 8mm tape to a shop to have it digitized and put on a mini DV tape or on other media that your PC would accept. Check with the shop to tell you on what media to digitize it so you can use your PC program to transfer it to your PC.

Just buy a Video-to-Digital device. Some others have suggested Pinnacle. If you are not sure about how to do it, get an all-in-one kit with editing software included. I use Aver Media cards in two PCs and I have transferred 8mm and VHS-C cassettes without any problems. If it's possible to change the capture settings, make sure you set them as high as possible. I record at 8MB/s. That's about 3.6GB per hour but the quality is superb. The beauty of this high sampling rate (usually it's 6MB/s or lower) is that you can use compression programs such as Gordian Knot or Auto Gordian Knot to Xvid your recordings so they take up very little space. I can pack up to 9hours of video onto a standard 4.7GB DVD.

We had to go to a shop for that. Try Asda and they'll put it on a DVD. You can then download from the DVD.
