I need a good HD camcorder in a reasonable price range.

Where can i find a camcorder that has HD quality and a price range up to $3,000?

  • our church is looking at a new video camera and editing software for all our movie needs. the software we're most likely getting is Final Cut Express HD for our G4 Mac. All we have right now for video cameras is a cheap sony for home use. it is terrible not having the quality.

  • Answer:

You Can get a Canon X-2 which is a profesional Small Budget movie making camera. it will cost around 3 thousand you can get a used one for less on ebay. or get a X-1 which is the first version of this camera which cost around 1500 - 2000 dollars used. also a 20 foot camera crane cost 400-500 dollars (on ebay) you might want that too.

You are right on the cusp of budget. You can get a high end 3ccd camcorder like the pdx-10 from Sony. This is similar to the PD-150 that was the workhorse of the Iraq war for CNN. It is high quality with good image and dependable electronics as well as being small profile. It also accepts professional XLR audio inputs so it can connect right to your audio board. Alternatively you can get a single chip (CMOS) Sony HDV camcorder. HDV is a highly compressed form of HD that can lead to motion artifacting and other noticeable "Glitches". In something as static as a church service this would probably not be a problem. In my opinion, (I work in a local access television station, so I see a lot of church services.) you would be better off with a 3ccd camera, like the PDx-10. (Someone said an xl-2, if you can get an xl-2 for three thousand dollars buy two!) The reason I suggest this is that it is going to be at least four more years before people at home stop viewing videos on vhs (This is when congress is going to mandate that tv's no longer have composite inputs and vhs quality goes away.). So until that time, any copies you give to elderly people are going to be VHS quality anyway. Second cable accessis going to be broadcast at analog quality for at least this long also. So in my opinion the extra quality of HDV will be lost when it is shown. That being the case, if you purchase a higher end SD camera with better audio, it will serve you and your audience better for that period of time. After all in your case, it is the message not the visuals that are most important. Alternatively, many churches are purchasing a video switcher and two robotic single ccd cameras (Think security cameras, priced around $800). This allows one person to operate both cameras and allows that same person to switch between them. This gives the show a more professional appearance, saves on editing time, and allows 360 degree coverage of a service so that choirs, and speakers do not necessarily have to be at the podium to be seen. Hope this helps, Tony
