Mini dv camcorder problems?

Why doesn't Canon mini-DV camcorder show up on Apple iMac (using mini-B to USB cable)?

  • The only cable Radio Shack had was mini B to USB. The iMac doesn't even show I have a new device installed, nothing. I have a 2003 Canon mini-DV camcorder. On some other forum I read that I should try mini-B to Firewire cable. But Radio Shack doesn't carry that. Does it even exist? Any other suggestion to get my movies off the camcorder and onto my computer? Thank you.

  • Answer:

Your camera SHOULD have both USB and Firewire (iEEE1394) mini ports. The USB is only for downloading still photos from the memory card, if installed and used. MiniDv video transfer requires the firewire port to be used. You need a Firewire cable. The firewire port on the camera is the more rectangular. On your iMac I don't know if you have the full size firewire port (looks like a fat USB port with one pointed end) or the mini port like on your camera. Get the Firewire cable according to what you have. This is all explained in the users manual, if you have lost yours, the Canon website below will let you enter the model of your camera and download a PDF version. http://www.usa.canon.com/consumer/controller?act=SupportIndexAct
