Check out the Sony Minis, they have different models and styles with different features, they work really well.

depends of what you want to use it for I have a JVC that I use for independent films that has a movie stile filming feature I like... but Mini DV is better than DVD only because it becomes easier to edit and move around

There is no best. No such thing as a best. What is the best TV that you ever watched? What is the best mountain? Best is a conception based on a collection of perceptions. There is no such thing as best, there is function and there is form. What do you want. I like the sony,panasonic,technics, anything that is made in Asia has to be best. I have no need to record the past cause I have experienced it, but if you feel it is that imporatnt, and are on a fixed budget, I am certain that if you call a electronic makeing or repairing place that you can buy, or they will sell you something for how ever much $ you have. Sony HandiCams have mini DVDs that burn the videos to the disk. A few drawbacks: Takes time to get the camcorder ready to "shoot". You have to finalize the disk, for it to play on a DVD player, and that takes time. You can't edit the DVD for later use, unless you rip the DVD, and then you lose a lot of quality. A MninDV camcorder, like JVC camcorders (my choice), records onto tapes with better quality than any DVD. You can edit and create amazing videos and burn those to disk. The camcorder has instant access and is ready when you are!! The drawback, is that you have to spend a lot of time editing or just converting to DVD format for burning to a DVD disk. best in that price range is a miniDV camcorder. it also has the capability of burning directly into a dvd. with integrated dvd though, that's the dvd camcorder but not in your specified price range.
