What is Video Based DVD?

Camcorder - HDD vs DVD Vs Tape?

  • I've done some R&D, and currently eying DCR-SR45 (HDD based) for buying. But I've few queries since This would be my first video camera. I know the basic advantages & disadvantages of HDD based camera but please tell me about DVD & Tape ones. The tape being magnetic is more prone to get damaged sloely after few recordings ? the quality might also get degraded, how much does a tape cost, how much hours can one tape contain, is it really old or obsolete technology now ? In DVD camcorders, i don't like the idea of carrying bunch of DVD's on my holiday, how much hours it contains ? can we use rerecordable DVD's in the camcorder ? so that once after copying it on PC's HDD i can reuse it. I'm satisfied whth te 20 hrs recording which 30 GB HDD offers, plus I almost carry my laptop everywhere so copying data wouldn't be a problem. Can I copy dat from handy cam directly to USB based External Harddisk ? In this camera Most part of price goes in for HDD and not optics etc., is it true ?

  • Answer:

HDD is probably better choice, because has the biggest advantage that is it record a lot of video without worry about running out, DVD and tape, you had to worry about running out time which can be big harzard at times. And keep changing cd or tape might damage the camcorder. Some argue that HDD when drop will be all lost, same with dvd or tape. But HDD does has more weight, but it hold more space, i rather do that then carry a bag with punch of tapes and disk. but the new tech (High Definition) has even more reason why should own HDD, since HDD hold more space, which is what HD need. HD camcorder really nice for those who own HDTV, since dvd camcorder and non HD gave your grain noise video in full screen but not with HD! But i do think HDD will be old tech once Solid Hard Drive and Flash drive price go down, those will be a lot faster and save space. DVD has more cons then Tape, because everytime if you wanna play the dvd into tv or pc, u must do a convert in the camcorder, which wasted time.

Actually, The Hard Drive Recorders Are The Best If You Can Afford It. DVD Is EASIER For Video 'Newbies' Who Don't Want To Go Through The Whole 'Transfer' Process. But, The Discs Will Only Record 30mins. Of High Quality Video Or 60mins. Of 'Standard' Quality Video And A Few Will Let You Do 'Extended Play' (90mins To 2 Hours) At A Greater Reduction Of Quality. You CAN Get DVD-RW (ReWriteable) For The Cameras. Tape Is STILL A Useful Format If You Want To Deal With Transferring, Editing, Compressing, Transcoding The Video Afterward To DVD And You Can Control The Quality Of The Finished Product. The Optics In ALL Brand Name Cameras Are Going To Be Of The HIGHEST QUALITY Available. The Manufacturers Know That This Is Where You Get The Sharpest, Clearest Picture (The Most Cutting Edge Electronics Aren't Worth Beans Without Them) I Would Invest In A FIRE WIRE Device For Transfers. USB Is A Poor Choice For Video. Good-Luck And Have Fun!!

As Richard mentioned, certainly flash mem vcams were not included in your 'R' (w/o 'D' of course). Early last year, some camcorders record exclusively to removable flash media- mem.cards, e.g., Sony HDR-CX7 also some professional vcams. Memory cards are relatively more rugged & durable and very small (just similar to my icon at the left) but with high capacity (10gb?). Some professional vcams use 16gb flash media. The vcam size then becomes smaller and lighter... can now concentrate more on the subject as it is not very tiring to handle on live shoots. In comparison, utmost care in handling of hard drives is a must. Lately, the cost of mem chips has gone down considerably such that it may not be long before this mode becomes common... and it may not be necessary to carry a laptop along.
