Best brand for HD camcorder?

HD Camcorder and the cinematic effect?

  • Hello, I've asked for a camcorder as a birthday gift. I'm ordering one from ebay and my mother gave me the choice for my camera. I've seen some really good ones, but I am confused as to which one should I buy for the following reason: So I saw a really good camera. Was from a good brand, not too expensive, but it was HD. And here is the thing I wouldn't want a HD camera for: It takes out the cinematic effect from the films. I would like a modern camera, with a good image, but I would still like to give that cinematic sense and seriousness to my home movies. Maybe, I'm wrong, or maybe there is a way to set the HD cameras to look a bit, less, "real". What do you think? Please help me out...

  • Answer:

The best way do to what you want is to get/use a Canon HV30. It does 24p and 30p. This progressive frame capture is what gives the "cinemtatic"effect. (Film cameras do 24p). The Sony "cinematic effect" is digitally derived and does not work very well. The Canon HV30 is miniDV tape based and requires your computer to have a firewire400 port because that is the ONLY way you will get video (DV or HDV) from the camcorder to the computer.
