How much would a repair cost for a camcorder?

Worth repairing a 7-year old camcorder?

  • I have a 7-year old Sony DCR-PC100E miniDV camcorder that failed to worked due to a broken flex cable. If I were to bring it to the Sony repair shop, minimum service charge is S$80+ and that is not including the cost of the replacement parts which I do not know the cost. I'm just afraid that if I repair it, some other areas may start to fail. Anyone know if the Sony camcorder is reliable to last for, say, another 3 years?

    Don't even bother. You will end up paying for the basic service only to be told that the spare parts are not available and the camcorder cannot be repaired. Buy a brand new one, there are tons of models available in the market to suit different requirements. NOTE: Sony DVD camcorder has one problem - if you use a non-Sony DVD media, it tells you that Sony media is recommended with a large blue screen for a few moments. What's frustrating is that this screen comes up each and every time you switch on the machine and stays for a few moments. This also causes the delay in starting the shoot. Sony customer service says they cannot remove this screen!

Nah, better put the money towards a digital cam. Old ones are so much out of date, with a digital one you can even link it to your PC and download the video.

You're in the lap of the gods with these things, but ask yourself why extended warranties don't run for 7 years. You could get lucky, but I'd be more inclined to go for a new camcorder. I'm not sure what you mean by a "flex cable" though - if you're talking about the cable from the transformer you can just buy a new one - it doesn't even need to be a Sony, just so long as the voltage and polarity are correct.
