How do I connect the yellow video cable to my computer?

I'm looking for a cable to connect to both my video camera and computer?

  • I have an old camera, a Canon ZR 500. I have found many cables for this model that can connect to both the camera and computer, but I guess that there's a particular one that fits in the DC IN. The DC IN outlet on my camera is rectangular shaped with a small rounded opening in the middle bottom.

  • Answer:

Just to be clear: You have a DC In connection on the back under the battery. This is where a Canon power adapter will plug in to operate off of normal 110-120v AC power...nothing to do with your computer. The DC is for "direct current". The port for a firewire connection is under the grey flap on the right of the camera and is labeled with DV, for digital video. There are a couple other ports under this flap. The DV conects with a firewire (iLink or ieee 1394) cable ONLY. You MUST have a firewire port on the computer too (either a 4 pin or a 6 pin) Adapters will not work.

I have my ZR 500 sitting in front of me, you cannot get any kind of signal out of the camera from that port on the lower part of the camcorder. That being said, find and read the manual. The manual says 'You can transfer recordings to a computer equipped with a IEEE1394 (DV) terminal. Use the the editing software supplied with your computer to transfer video recording from tape to computer. Refer to the instruction manual of the software.......'
