Using anti-virus software should be your first choice and then you can consider doing some changes in the computer to solve slow computer problems. In the “Advanced” tab of system properties, you can adjust the visual effects in the settings. Here, you can choose to adjust best performance or appearance based on your computer configuration. If the hardware configuration is rather shabby, it is better for you to choose best performance so as to run system smoothly. But if you have supreme configuration, well, you feel free to open all the Windows XP visual effects and to enjoy it. In the “Advanced Options”, you can set to optimize processor and memory preferentially. And when running applications, the system can put memory and CPU ahead of programs which are good for speeding up computer. And if you do not have any special requirement to your computer, please do not startup the function of “Automatically Update”. It is unnecessary to update certain programs by Microsoft and you have to spend much time and space to download those useless things. Besides, you should not tick “Remote Desktop” and “Remote Assistance” because the startup of these two functions leaves holes for potential problems that hackers enter into your computer easily. Therefore, in order to protect your privacy, it is better for you to forbid the two options. When talking about network optimization, it refers to optimize the Internet Explorer mainly. You can optimize network in all-round way. In the “Internet Options”—“General” tab, you can set the home page as “about: blank” to open Internet Explorer quickly. And, you are bound to delete all the Internet temporary files to free up disk space. But at the same time, it may take more time to visit websites. So, you had better create an Internet temporary folder based on your available disk space capacity and 10MB to 30MB is the best value. Moreover, you should form a good habit of clean up history records regularly. By doing this, others do not know what websites you have visited so that you can protect your own privacy maximally. Or, you can set the date of history record as “0” day that system can delete the records automatically. I was reading over the other answers that have been left for you, and there is some good info there. I have a computer that is over 7 years old and I'm still using it, and it's fast. I like the info given about cleaning your registry. Here is what I would recommend. Go to www.easypcerrorfix.com, and run their free scan. This scan will tell you if you need to clean your registry, and if you do down load the help you need right there. This is the cleaner that I like. Give it a try.

Try running a diskcleanup first. Download CCleaner and get rid of your temporary files and such. After that defragment. You can download and check out the trial version of Diskeeper2010. Its the best defragger out there. Set it to run on auto and go about your work. This will speed up your file access. http://www.diskeeper.com/defrag.aspx
