I think that you made a typing mistake. There are no hard drives of 1GM any more. Even a 40GB ( 40 x yours) you can't buy any more. Too small. The belong in a museum. Perhaps you mean RAM of 1 GB. That is fine for windoes xp, but not for Vista. You should have a minimum of 2 or 3GB to run Vista smoothly. You could try out a few things.
