What does this RAS error mean (Alltel Aircard)?
-
I have an Alltel aircard (data card). I keep getting this error: RAS ERROR, RETURN VALUE 5, which prevents me from getting an internet connection. It does not do it all the time, sometimes it connects, but more often than not, I get the error. After I clear the RAS ERROR box, it will sometimes say ERROR WITH PPP CONNECTION 5. Alltel keeps telling me that its the computer (Dell Laptop, which is new)...which it can't be as it does connect sometimes. I am running Windows 7 and the Alltel card is a Pantech UM175. What is going on? Signal strength does not seem to matter, I get the error whether it is at 100% or 20%. This is really annoying and Alltel C/S is worthless, even their help desk does not have a clue.

Answer:
I had a similar problem with Verizon, and also used a Pantech UM175. It was intermittent, and started after I installed the access manager on a second computer. When I attempted to connect with that computer, it re-initialized the card, and made Verizon's RAS servers think I did not have a valid account. After a few weeks of troubleshooting, and a new card being sent with no resolution, I finally reached a tech who know what she was doing. She ended up completely removing my account from their authentication system, and then manually re-entering all of the pertinent settings in their system. It worked fine for a few months, then it started happening again. I've since destroyed my UM175 by way of 5.56 caliber revenge, and upgraded to a wireless hotspot. Haven't had a single bit of trouble since. Also, it seems that Kaspersky antivirus has a disable auto-dial feature somewhere in the configuration, and that can cause this issue. If you're running Kaspersky, may want to loook into it, and see if it fixes your problem. Not sure if you've looked into what RAS is or not, but it's the Remote Access Service. The event code is saying that, for one reason or another, at the times you're having difficulties, the access/authentication server at Alltel can not verify your account.
