My computer has been running super slow for about a week or 2 now. For the life of me I can not figure out why?

I have not recently done anything that would have taken up a significant amount of memory. I am always running AVG and no viruses have been found on my computer. I have not made any recent changes to my browser or to my internet provider. The only thing I can think of is that I recently started taking an online course and use my computer to access that but I can not see how that would effect the speed of my computer. Is my online class causing the problem or is it something else? I mean the speed of my computer has almost literally been cut in half! Please help. This is so frustrating. I have cable modem service and have always had high speed. My computer is running so slow now that when I type a sentence in it takes about 15 or 20 seconds before the characters even show up on the screen. I am typing faster than the computer is showing my words and I type with only 2 fingers! So I am obviously not a fast typer! I would appreciate any feedback into why you think this is happening and anything I can do to solve the problem. Thank you!

Answer:
Sorry to hear about your problem. If you don’t want to buy a new system, there are quite a few tweaks you can do on your own: Remove unneeded startup programs Run a disk cleanup and defragger Clean up the Windows registry You can also download software that can do all three of these things automatically. I recommend tying it out and scanning your system for free at: http://www.registry-clean-up.net

The speed of your computer and the speed at which your computer can load internet pages are two different things. I'm going to assume its your computer that is slow because you mentioned the thing about the words taking 15-20 seconds to be displayed when you type them. If AVG says you're virus free then you probably are but what about spyware? If you don't already then i suggest weekly spyware scans with Malware Bytes. Its free and its very effective http://fileforum.betanews.com/detail/Malwarebytes-AntiMalware/1186760019/1 The other thing that could be going on is that your computer is cluttered with masses of junk which will slow down the speed of any computer. For this i recommend weekly sweeps with CCleaner. Its also free and very very good. http://www.piriform.com/ccleaner/download CCleaner will clean stuff that you will probably never ever need but its a good idea to just check which boxes are ticked by default, the ticked boxes being the ones that will be deleted. I would hate for the software to automatically delete the contents of your recycle bin for example if you're one of those people who like to leave important stuff in there. If you haven't run this cleaner before and have been using your computer for more than 6 months without a good clean then this cleaner will do your computer the world of good. Using the same program (CCleaner) i would also clean the registry. Just make sure you choose 'yes' when it propmts you to make a backup of the registry. And remember where you've saved it. It shouldnt be a problem but its a wise idea to have a backup, just in case. Another good thing you can do is to check to see if you're maxing out your RAM or CPU usage for some unforseen reason. To do this open the task manager (by right clicking the task bar) and then choosing the 'Performance' tab. Here you will see graphs that will indicate how hard the CPU is working and how much of your available ram you are using. Recently i had the problem of having the flash ads that are on most web pages chew up nearly half of my CPU usage at any one time. This will also be the case with you if you leave web pages open. I ended up having to block flash content in my browser to deal with the problem. Two other important things to check are that your hard drive needs a defrag. Degragging can take a long time but is necessary now and then. Probably every 2 months, depending on how much you use your computer. And also, how much free space do you have on your hard drive? You should always keep at least a couple GB free on your hard drive for page filing. I hope i've helped and i wish you luck.
