Public IP Address can be traced back to the Internet Service Provider that owns the IP and no further. From there the ISP can tell who is assigned that IP. It takes a court order for the ISP to reveal the information to police and will never reveal to anyone else. At least an Honest ISP.

Short answer to that is you can't. In the UK all that information is protected by the Data Protection Act 1998 and the Human Rights Act 1998, Clause 8 The Right to Privacy. I can't vouch for other countries as some of them seem to appear to have a complete gung ho and cavalier attitude to other people's personal and private information! Using a IP locater will only give you a rough location and can be up to 200 miles out. Phoning an ISP and they will not tell you for the reasons above. Only the Police and other certain Agencies have access to that kind of information and ONLY after having obtained a Court Order and a VERY good reason for needing it.

unless you're behind proxy site after proxy site it's very easy.

It's very east to trace someone's actual IP address. Of course the police can, and im sure a phone provider has a directory of their customer's IP addresses as well. however the common person can't just walk into the store and ask for someone's IP. additionally, if someone got a hold of your IP address, unless they are VERY skilled in computers, they wouldn't be able to do anything dangerous with it.

Yes. If you type in somebodies IP address it will usually tell you their internet provider. Police will obtain subpoena's for anybody doing suspicious activity under that IP address. Which means they basically 1.) look up the IP address. 2.)Find the internet provider and Call them. 3.) Optain the address From the company the IP address belongs to 4.) Go knock on their door if suspicious activity is involved. This is usually how they catch sick creepers and what not. If you type in an IP address it will not tell you their name just their service provider. Unless you are the police or a computer nerd with no life an IP address can give away your exact location but it's not all that easy unless you are the law or you have no life. Type into google. What is my IP address and it will tell you. Once you figure it out if you don't know it if the website doesn't tell you. Type your IP address in again and it will tell you who you have your internet through. Creepy! Whatever you do goes under your IP address and being recorded basically. It is all traceable. So it is basically all free information but not right down to the street address. That is all private unless your doing something wrong then it will be probably be made otherwise.

It's "easy" to Trace IP addresses. Its not too hard to associate that IP with an ISP and then request that customer information. However there is a large amount of "Red Tape" in place that makes it very difficult for just anyone to find out where you live based on your IP. And this can be very easily avoided through use of Proxies and VPN's Police and government agencies need to break privacy laws to do this so they only use it in the most extreme cases, (Terrorist, Child Pornography etc) If you have downloaded a couple films or looked at any illegal websites, you are unlikely to be searched for. That said there are Laws being passed to allow governments to look at Internet activity without needed to go through the Red Tape. This has met with a lot of opposition due to its obvious infringement on a personal privacy. Hope this helped

Using Ip address, you can trace a person location very easily. Whenever you visit a website or send an email, your IP address gets traced. Go to http://whatismyipaddress.com/ See it yourself. Click on additonal info for more more info. If you are using dynamic ip address, its a safe bet than static ip address. It's safe to get connected to internet using unsecure wifi network. However, when you visit a website, you computer name also gets traced.

Ip always goes back to the provider how you get that information is up to you you can download ip tracer programs that give you the servers providers name once traced.

Yes the ISP could VERY easily trace an IP! (That's if the uses is not going through proxies ect) Contact the police, the ISP will not give the details to you. The police have to sepena the records from what I understand.
