Macbook Pro/ Macbook Air speed comparison?
-
I am currently an owner of a late 2007 Macbook Pro and am looking at possible upgrades. Before anyone tells me, I know the Macbook line is due for upgrades, I'm just comparing to current options and wondering what will suit my needs best. I love my MBP but am noticing that as I upgrade over time my RAM usage goes up and I find the internal HDD insufficient to handle the page outs that occur. I can't upgrade beyond 4gb (I have 3 already) and I have speed issues when I have more than a few programs open simultaneously. Today I went to a Best Buy and played with the new Airs and was thoroughly impressed. I opened the entire iWork suite, iTunes, iPhoto, multiple Youtube videos and more simultaneously and had no lag (my current more, powerful machine would experience major slowdowns after just the Youtube videos and iPhoto being open) despite the fact that I maxed out the RAM and it was paging out to the SDD. I expect this SDD is the primary reason for the speed bump (as the 1.6 GHZ i5 processor is far slower than my 2.2 GHZ Core 2) and I watched the RAM page out to swap in Activity Monitor at 8MB/S (my MBP only manages 2.) All the while I was swooping through Mission Control at max speed and doing everything I could to tax the system and check speed. I tried similar process' on MBP's and iMacs in the store and noticed programs open far slower (one "bounce" on the Air compared to half a dozen+ on the MBP's and iMac). I would also attribute this to the SSD. I say all this to preface my real question/ concern, I use my computer for some light photo editing, web browsing, school work (presentations and documents), light video editing, and not much more. I'm growing tired of the slow speed on my MBP and am looking for a proper upgrade. Would swapping out the slower HDD for an SSD on a new MBP make the machine as fast as or faster than an Air (in terms of opening programs and reducing lag when RAM runs out)? Or would a Macbook Air suit my needs just fine? I was using almost a half GB of swap on the Air and noticed no lag, so could I really get away in every day life with only 2GB RAM? Every day functional speed paired with low price is what I am looking for, the Air seems to suit my bill and I am wondering if anyone agrees.

Answer:
Short Answer: YES Long answer: Macbook air indeed suits your working criteria. The SSD makes the computer work faster as they are non mechanical and thus faster. And that is the reason why the new macbook air comes with 1.7Ghz processor because that was enough to beat the 2.3Ghz processor of the macbook pro. The macbook air is a lot much lighter which makes it easier for one hand to pick it up. From my bookmarks here you would be able to find the an excellent review from an owner of both that would help you out on this decision: http://budurl.com/AirOrPro And if you decide to go for the macbook air because of the faster speed and lighter weight than from my research here it is available at the cheapest rate: http://budurl.com/NewestMBA But if you prefer to go for the macbook air than here you would be able to find it: http://budurl.com/NewestMBP
