In order to use Outlook Express in order to back up Yahoo email do I need to start with the email address ISP?

  • can I use any email address or only the one provided by the ISP..also what is a pop server ...what does OE mean when they ask for a smtp .

Dewcoons answer is not only correct, but detailed, and the definitive answer to your question. To use Outlook Express to back up your email you would: 1) subscribe to Yahoo Plus for about $20 / year 2) configure Outlook express to use the Yahoo mail servers for send (SMTP) functionality and receive (POP) functionality. There are configuration instructions in Yahoo Mail for Outlook Express and other clients with more detail, under "Help" when logged into mail. Personally I do exactly what you're asking about and find the $20/yr fee a good value, especially if you like to back up your data. If you do that you should also look at options to synchronize your Outlook Express and Yahoo Mail address books. Good luck!

POP (Post Office Protocol) and SMTP (Simple Mail Transfer Protocol) are formats in which mail is encoded (POP) and tranmistted (SMTP). Your Yahoo e-mail program allows you to create, send and recieve e-mail using Yahoo's servers and their mail protocol. It is automatically configred to talk to the Yahoo mail servers Outlook Express is simple a program for reading mail. It is not automatically attached to a server for sending and receiving e-mail. To send and receive through Outlook Express you have to tell it where the server(s) are. The POP server is the one that holds your e-mail account. The SMTP server is the one that sends and receives new mail. Free Yahoo e-mail is NOT set up to be accessible from Outlook Express unless you PURCHASE the addition Yahoo Plus. Then you can use Outlook Express to access your Yahoo account. The advance to doing that is that if you have other accounts that allow POP access (elsewhere or at Yahoo Plus), you can view all the accounts through Outlook rather than having to open multiple e-mail programs. The Free Yahoo e-mail allows you to access any other POP accounts you may have (for free). You just need to know the POP and SMTP servers names for the account(s).
