How do I format my memory card on my computer?

Insert memory card into computer, asks to format help?

  • when i insert my memory card into my computer it says its not recognized and asks if i want to format it...if i format it, does it erase everything on the card?

  • Answer:

If it is a SDHC card (look at the card, it will say), older card readers won't be able to read it and will assume its not formatted. In general, cards smaller than 4gig are not SDHC, card bigger are always SDHC, and 4gig cards can go either way. SD=Secure Digital (a common format for flash based cards) HC=High Capacity HC cards are addressed a little differently than non HC cards, so a reader or device that knows what an HC card is can read either format, where older non-HC readers/devices can only read non-HC cards.

No, but you must make sure you format it to windows xp, then convert any files afterwards. Otherwise, you'll have to go through a lengthy retrieval and recompression process.

If you format it, it will erase everything on the card. I only question how old this computer is, if it can't read the format.

Are you inserting a Micro SD? If it had not been formatted it would have nothing on it. Where did the "memory card" come from, what kind of a device?
