Why can't ppl hear me on my mic attached to my headphones? How to reset settings in XP Home?
-
I've tried all the obvious ways... it's not muted, the headphone and mic are plugged into the right ports, the volume's fine and I've played with the controls in Control Panel: Sounds & Audio Devices AND Sound Effect Manager. I can hear people but they can't hear me. My boyfriend tried to be nice by changing my settings so my iTunes could hook into his stereo speakers instead of coming out my PC speakers but he didn't show me what he did and he's away for over a month and therefore can't voice chat with me. Funny thing is, I tried looking at the microphone settings, and if I'm playing music in iTunes the Sound Hardware Test Wizard: Microphone Test thinks I'm speaking into the mic; it shows green bars moving with the music. The mic is on a headset, Altec Lansing, and I don't have any fancy drivers, just Realtec AC97. Please help! Is there anything I can do short of a System Restore? Stupid question: would that make me lose new files? I think so but I've never had to do a restore.

Answer:
1. It sounds like the iTunes program is grabbing hold of the mic before your messenger program, so that when your voice/messenger program tries to use your mic it cant get any sound out of it. One option is to close iTunes every time you want to talk to people over voice/messenger. Closing the program may not be enough - you may have to kill the process entirely by pressing Ctrl-Alt-Del and getting up Task Manager and then looking for the process name under the processes list and clicking on End Process. 2. If the above doesnt work, go to Control Panel - Sound and Audio devices and check under the Audio tab that the Sound recording device is set to the one for your headphones (you can try changing it if you arent sure) and do the same for voice - voice recording.
