Add Subtitles To An AVI File?

• One movie I have, it's Japanese and it dosen't have subtitles. I heard theres a place where you can download just subtitles. The subtitles are either SFV or SRT, I forget which oneis subtitles.I know becuase when I download movies that are in the rar files, they usually have either .srt or .sfv file encluded. Is there a software where I can join a.srt or .sfv (whatever a subtitle file extension is) to an AVI video. Also, if there is, will the subtitles come up at the right time when they speak, how will I know? ex. What if I download a subtitle file and it says what there saying, 1 line after another then no one speaks for awhile but subtitles are still coming on screen after every few seconds? I'm just asking because I'm new to this, never added subtitles to any file before. Dunno how it works.
