Why are Windows Media Player slowing down?

Why wont my Windows Media Player play my DVDs?

  • I recently had a whole new Windows installed because I got a virus. I used to be able to watch DVD's no problem. Now when I insert the DVD my cmputer reads it, and Windows Media Player loads but it says "Windows Media Player cannot play the DVD because a compatible DVD decoder is not installed on your computer." How do I fix this?

  • Answer:

Versions of Windows prior to Vista didn't come with a DVD decoder. It was either installed by the manufacturer or had to be bought separately. DVD decoder software often comes with retail DVD drives. If you had the OS reinstalled instead of using the manufacturer's restore function then you lost the decoder. You'll either have to get a restore disc for your computer from the manufacturer or buy a DVD decoder. I think the program VLC can play DVDs. It's free if you want to give it a try. http://www.videolan.org/vlc/ - Dominic
