What is a computer system?

What will happen to my computer if I do a full system restore?

  • Okay so a little while ago I completely redid my computer using on of those CDs which reinstalls the operating system. Except I didn't use the right CD. I used a CD for a completely different computer. So now the operating system and the drivers I have aren't completely right for my computer. So if I do a full system restore, will my computer go back to the way it was when I used the CD or will it go back to the way it was when I first bought it?

  • Answer:

If you use the correct CD, i.e. the system restore CD that was supplied with your computer, then yes, if done properly, the computer will return to it "as new" status. But bear in mind that simply doing a system restore might not be enough. For some computers you get two CD's. One which does the system restore and another that has all the drivers, manufacturer specific software (mostly system tools) and whatever pre-install software you ordered (MS Office, etc). So it might be that after you do the system restore you will have to use the second CD to complete the restore process. However if you're slightly computer savvy, you can forego the restore process and simply download and install all the necessary drivers and tools from the computer manufacturer's website. But this depends if you have managed to get your operating system (XP, Vista, etc) working with the correct serial key. If you're a novice at this then I suggest you use the proper restore CD and take the long road rather than the short-cut! Good luck.

when you first bought it, considering you have the right disk now.

You reinstalled the OS from a CD, did you do any formatting of any kind? if so Windows System Restore wont be able to do that. But if you're talking about using the right discs now, you could do that and everything should be fine.

Probably depends on whether you use the right CD or not. If you use the restore disk that belongs to the computer, it will probably go back to the way it was when you first bought it. If you use the wrong CD again, probably not.

i think it will be the same because system restore is part of the operating system that you have installed and it can only revert to save points after the installation of the operating system.
