How do I find the owner of an old phone number?

I have a phone number that USED to belong to someone. I'd like to find the last name of the person that it belonged to. I know the area it's from and the service carrier but the number is no longer active. Is there a way to track the former owner of the number?

Answer:
There are a couple of ways... If it is REALLY old, like earlier than 1975, go to the library and ask to see the City Directories. You'll find a reverse phone directory within them and with that you can locate the name of the owner. If it is RECENTLY old, perhaps from 1990 to present you can look it up online. Type the area code and phone number in your browser (XXX-XXX-XXXX) and follow the links. You MAY have to use a search service and it MAY cost you a few bucks. EDIT: You'll need to look a little into each online offering. Polk has been around since the 1700's and I think they have a trial period.
