How to find inodes within a file?

How to find the file extention?

  • I got one file. somebody send to me. In that file had no extentions. ( Like .doc) Only the name is avilable. and I try to open with .doc, .jpg, .mpg,... Not opening any that file. I want to find the file extension. How to OPEN that file? How to find the file extension? Any software is there? to find the file extention. I need full details.

  • Answer:

    1. If extension is hidden: In windows explorer or "my computer", go to the menu bar and click "tools --> folder options --> view" uncheck "hide extensions for known types" 2. If there really is no extention Then you'll have to ask your friend. Double-click it, and try opening it with all sorts of programs. word, picture viewer, winzip, winrar, etc. 3. There is no software that can auto-detect file types. You can open the program in notepad or an ascii editor, and try to guess what type of file it is. good luck though

As it looks like you tried all the extension such as .doc. .jpg,.mpg and it did not work. Then see if it is zipped or not. If it is zip folder then you try it with .zip may be. Also remember if you can not open it then may be corrupted or may have virus in it. Ask the person to sent it again and ask to put proper file extension such as .doc or .pdf or .jpg etc. Sushil Bhattacharya

right clicking on the file & going down to properties doesn't give you the details of the file, & the extension ??

Right click it and go into properties and you should be able to find out what type of file it is.
