My windows XP computer doesn't work anymore. How can I fix it?
-
I asked this question before, but I'm asking again. I put a flash drive in the computer (the flash drive had pictures on it that were TIFF files) and when I tried opening the file, it took forever, so i deiced to close the window. When the window closed, everything on my desktop was gone. The menu bar was gone and all the icons were gone. I waited for it to come back, and it didn't so I turned off the computer manually. When I turned it back on, a blue screen would pop up telling me to remove all hard drives from the computer, when i had already done that. I can't get the blue screen to go away. I need this computer because I have many documents and pictures on it. How can I fix this, and get my computer going again? I already tried tapping F8 and its not working. I don't know what else to do. My computer in from 2002

Answer:
If you removed the flash drive while it was still being read, you can pretty much say goodbye to what was on that, as well as the computer. The BSOD message should be able to tell you were the fault is, but unless you know how to read it, it is really pointless. You can either take the pc to somewhere that can fix it, or just reformat the hdd and re-install the operating system. Of course, re-formatting will mean you lose EVERYTHING that is on the hard drive, but if you have backed up regularly, the loss won't be that big.

If you have the Windows XP CD, boot the computer up and choose R for repair, you need to fix the boot sector of the hard drive. 1. First prompt which Windows, normally 1 or just press enter. 2. Command prompt, type: fixmbr, press enter, answer yes 3. Command prompt, type: fixboot, press enter, answer yes 4. Command prompt, type: exit, press enter 5. Remove the CD before it boots back up. If this doesn't fix the issue, then it has corrupted the Windows Boot file. You didn't lose anything on the hard drive.
format it. . u have lost your data

It sounds like you'll either need to format it or restore it to factory settings which is about the same thing. However you may be able to do a system restore or a repair. I need to know what your computer make and model is.

you should NEVER hard shutdown a machine it can cause disk errors. doing a ctrl+alt+del normally would get the programs to close through device manager. Most likely the files on the flash drive carried a spyware or virus infection. Very common. And you have NOT removed hard drives, these are inside the machine. Flash is NOT a hard drive. In any case no message should ever tell you to remove hard drives, as the machine can not even try to start without them. This may be an infection that has got into memory, so taking off power connections for half an hour may clear it enough to get started. If you do, start into safe mode with networking on a wired (network cable ) connection as wireless will not do this. Download the free scanner from http://malwarebytes.org and run a full scan. Otherwise boot from the original XP disk and at the second screen showing the partitions and system, select the R repair option. This should replace all system files with originals. It should get you started, but will NOT remove infections, so when it is finished do the scan. Then let it run all the Windows updates.

When your menu bar and icons disappear, that means you ended the explorer.exe process (it's what handles the interface in Windows). You did not have to shut off the computer, you could have held CTRL+Shift+ESC to open task manager, selected File->New Task->typed in "explorer.exe", and that would have restored your interface within seconds. I can't quite understand your blue screen problem, your description of it is too vague. I've never heard of an error message stating that you must "remove all hard drives from the computer". In any case, as long as you didn't erase/format your hard drive, you can easily access it to retrieve files from it. One way is to use another empty hard drive to install Windows on it and then you can access the files on your original hard drive. If you don't have a spare hard drive but have a USB flash drive with at least a 512MB capacity, you could install PCLinuxOS on it (easy to install), which is a portable operating system. You can use it to access your hard drive(s).
