Can I get a decent IT job with just certifications?

Can you get a job in IT just on the strength of certifications?

  • For example A+ and other Microsoft certifications

  • Answer:

They certainly help, and some companies prefer you to have them, but 99 times out of 100, the employer is going to be more concerned about your attitude, work history, and experience. Having certifications shows a dedication to your trade and a good grasp of knowledge which may impress employers, but experience is going to beat certifications any day of the week. That being said, they are still great to have if you have the opportunity to get one. Also, in response to the person below me: Know someone in the industry. That's how I did it.

In most cases experience is going to beat out certifications, but if you are looking to get your foot in the door then certifications are a must. It also comes down to what they are. An A+ or Net+ won't mean anything next to an MCSE or even an MCSA. You need certifications to get in the door and then real world experience to work up the ladder.

As IT is much more competitive now, they tend to look for University qualifications and certifications are seen as extras, if you want to make it to the top - go to uni ;)
