Why can't I open Exe files?

My Computer wont open .exe files and I cant do a system restore.?

  • My computer will not open any file ending in .exe and it will not let me do a system restore. Every time I try to open either one of these, my computer brings up an "Open With" window and gives me the option of opening either one of them with Windows Media Center. I believe I have a virus and My Norton 360 (Which I figured out a way of opening) is currently doing a Full System Scan but seems to be unsuccessful. I also figured out how to open my Google Chrome. I tried to boot up in Safe mode but when I press F8 at start-up nothing happens. Please help me get rid of this virus and be able to open the .exe files again. If I need to delete everything off of my laptop, its okay. I already saved my music, pictures, and school papers to an 8GB flash-drive. By the way, I am using Windows 7.

    Ahh, I had a virus of the very same nature. Do not use that garbage Norton, no matter how many praise it. Download the following, SpyBot S&D MalwareBytes Avira Antivirus And Rkill(on the website, make sure to also download the other renamed versiona, such as eXplorer.exe, or Rkill.com). I recommend running Rkill before you do a virus scan, then SpyBot, then MalwareBytes(a full scan). After that, restart your computer. But... Try running your Executable's as Administrator first to see if they will open, luckily for me doing so managed to open the file, if unsuccesful, do as I instructed.

Simple enough, just left click the task bar, click start windows task manager, click Processes, find dwm.exe, click End process. and that should allow you to do a system restore.
