Upgrading to WIndows 7 from Vista Problem: How do i reinstall my LAN card? PLEASE HELP ME!?
-
I just got my Windows 7 upgrade for my Dell Laptop from Vista. I put in the assistant, and it asked me something along the lines of "we need to remove your LAN card to continue" so i pressed yes, and now i cannot connect to the internet! when i went further, it said it couldn't continue because i has "internet explorer google toolbar", but i cannot find it. how do i reinstall the card and reconnect to the internet and remove the toolbar? please help me! thank you!

Answer:
the other answer is a valid approach, but your dell machine should have come with a drivers CD. i just did the vista - win 7 upgrade on my xps 8000 machine and i had to remove all incompatible drivers first (with the dell upgrade assistant CD that should have come w/your free upgrade) and then (after the upgrade to windows 7) re-installed all the removed drivers by inserting the drivers CD that should have come with your computer originally (not in the win 7 upgrade kit). the drivers CD will load a screen with a bunch of tabs at the top. click on the drivers tab. then under that, a bunch of hardware will show up in a list, some of the HW will have check marks to the left (this means that that piece of HW was detected in your system). you should be able to go thru the checked list of detected HW in that list and, if i remember correctly, right click on each and tell it to install the driver. i had to re-install my broadcom Gigabit ethernet NIC chipset driver first thing. i'd re-install the network (NIC) chip driver first, followed by the other drivers since the drivers CD can go out on the net and check for the latest version of the other drivers you intend to re-install.

You'll need access to another computer - one that can access the internet. Connect to http://support.dell.com/support/downloads/index.aspx?c=us&l=en&s=gen Select service tag and put your computer's service tag in (it should be on the bottom), download the LAN card driver to a flash drive, bring it to your computer and install it. (They should have a note in there to do it before you start the upgrade. I guess they're just good, not perfect.)
